A New York City Stew

What foods would you like to make?

Uptown, it’s soul food and arroz con habichuelas.

To the west, it’s burgers and fries and squid appetizers.

The UES has attracted a Brooklyn Dumpling Shop to compete with Vanessa’s.

Midtown, it’s salads and soup or grilled cheese on rye.

Chelsea is gonna prove more haute and head to the Village for eclectic.

We can still find brisket or lox on the Lower East Side when we’re not getting full-on Italian fare.

Peking duck? Why not head over to Chinatown now.

Choices

Dogs or cats?

They walk among us with style and grace. They have the mastery of the streets and often our hearts.

If we consider ourselves to be “cat people” they likely rule the roost in our homes. Nothing is off limits to our pets.

Do you prefer having a cat at home or is a dog more your style?

The advantage of owning a dog if you have to choose between the two is they are natural walking partners.

You’re going to be able to explore parks and nooks with your canine buddy. The cat will stay home.

The daily walk

What do you think gets better with age?

Besides wine and old wood? Your favorite sweater ages well, but then it gets baggy. Likewise, your shoes, as they adjust to your feet, reach that point of a perfect fit. Unfortunately, they, too, eventually get sloppy.

Old buildings also get creaky, but with proper and attentive maintenance, they offer pleasure inside and out for a long time.

Food

What’s the most delicious thing you’ve ever eaten?

Wild strawberries is the short answer. In Italy. Long ago.

But I suggest you think of food while traveling as a distillation of memories, delight and pleasure.

Meals abroad are different from those we take at home.

Our senses are heightened, and we tend to pay closer attention.

There were sardines in Portugal. Yes, sardines. Langouste somewhere by the ocean.

Still, it was the wild strawberries that summed everything up.

They provided the dessert course for my fond recollections, too.

Playing favorites

What is your favorite season of year? Why?

To paraphrase Oklahoma (the musical) when I’m not near the season I love, I love the season I am near.

Weather plays a big part in how we enjoy our day.

Walking is always pleasant on a 60-degree morning in sunshine. It’s still cool but so nice. These conditions are likely in the Springtime. But they can also be replicated in the Fall.

As we approach December’s chill, I always say another layer will help ward it off.

There is an especially sensuous thrill when the humidity and the heat embrace us. Dressing lightly and let it be hot.
