Riverside Park

Who knew?

In anticipation of a great evening, and with my pal D that’s a given, dinner was the preamble.

The venue for the main event was on the row of great churches flanking 120th Street. We were heading to see General Mischief Dance Theatre perform Joyful Noise. Oh boy. That was grand.

But dinner, way up there in Columbia-country, where? Riverside Park’s Ellington was D’s bright idea. More treats and feasts.

Overlooking the Hudson, from a picnic table on a warm evening, with a really truly good lobster roll was perfect.

As was the sylvan setting. There’s been enough rain this season to make our parks green. Riverside is no exception and there was a magical feel to walking along those green grown and muddy paths.

Museum of the City of New York

When you tell people you plan a visit to the Museum of the City of New York, they usually have a positive response.

So [who can resist] a chance to enjoy tea [and crumpets?] with a curator …

From my blog, All the Best

There will be a Curator’s Cup on January 22nd with Lilly Tuttle. (It’s sold out.)

One of the exhibits she will discuss is called Art Deco City, 1920s New York, shown off in postcards. (Closes Feb 17.)

The Stettheimer Dollhouse has long been a highlight at MCNY. It is the creation of one of the Stettheimer sisters, which showcases a post- WW1 New York and is a memento of their Tarrytown estate, Andre Brook.

MCNY is at the top of Museum Mile. Come visit.

It’s a quiet, delightful destination.

Don’t take just my word for it. Phyllis McGinley, 1961 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, found it endearing.

The poem, Ode to an Institution, was published in The New Yorker in 1953. (The link takes you to MCNY’s Instagram where I recommend you read it! It’s artful and artless.)

Coffee

My coffee hunt has pretty much ended with cups at home or a flatwhite at Starbucks. The latter is the one good cup they serve, and I love the app.

Passing a coffee bar cleverly tricked out as Ground Central well, who among us is strong enough to resist.

Yes. Definitely a robust and balanced cappucino at a price underlining its confidence. 8ozs at about 6 bucks makes this a 50 cent a sip drink.

As I continued on my way up 2nd Avenue, a second outpost of this coffee purveyor appeared just a few blocks north.

In fact, this was a day where duplicates just kept popping up along my route.

Odd but true.

There were restaurants with similar profiles; cleaners clumped on a single block; groups of youngsters similarly disregarding the rules of the road when passing oldsters.

A cortada [aka short] sampling from the Coffee Trail:
